Run out your Asthma.

What an admirable decision, if you have decided to run in spite of your Asthma!
Hope you are regularly taking your preventive inhaler to keep your Asthma under control and your lung functions near normal. Lung functions at home can be assessed by monitoring the peak flow with the help of peak flow meter. Peak flow meter is a simple hand operated device which is used without any battery or electricity.
Its simple to use and is very useful to decide the actions to be taken if the peak flow rate is lower than expected for your height and age.
The doctor during your usual visits must have taught you how to use this home based lung function test the, Peak flow, into every day practice.
on the day of run take Asthalin inhaler 15 minutes before the run. Keep this inhaler in your pocket with your identity details and a written protocol for emergency. This should also include the phone no of doctor to be contacted in emergency.
Before the run do slow warm up exercise. start with slow jogging than improve the pace with confidence. Do not have the stress of competing , have the enthusiasm of completing!
AT THE END OF THE RUN OR EVEN IN THE MIDDLE IF YOU HAVE CHEST TIGHTNESS OR CHOKING USE YOUR ASTHALIN INHALER FROM THE POCKET.
In all probabilities you will not need it, be confident , run and run out Asthma !

Exercise and asthma

Many parents come to me to give them a medical certificate so that their asthmatic children can be exempted from PT and games.
Others ask for a medical certificate so that school bus can come at their doorstep and children do not have to undergo unnecessary exertion .
Science says that exercise or any exertion is a positive trigger in Asthmatic patient of any age and should be used for its benefit rather than with fear.
Patients of Asthma have even won the Olympics !
There should be a written protocol which every Asthma patient should follow. 5 to 15 minutes prior to exertion, exercise , dance , sports , aerobic activities , long lecture , debate etc Asthalin inhaler should be inhaled. with this up to 4hrs the activity will not be interrupted.Meanwhile exercise as a positive trigger has improved the oxygenation , perfusion , ventilation , dilatation and other lung functions.
Gradually Asthalin before exercise may not be needed at all.
In fact asthalin thus taken helps you get the benefits of exercise and pleasure of sports. Cheer up and stay outdoors , play and win asthma !

Common myths in India about asthma .

Bronchial asthma management has revolutionized with availability of inhalers .
But its a pity that even many educated people are skeptical about their use.
They fear that inhalers could be addictive , the salts in them are steroids which could be harmful for body. They fear that inhalers are the last resort in Asthma management so why should they not try tablets and injections first.

The matter of fact is that inhalers are the safest , they are scientific and surest way of drug delivery to the airways.
The inhaled steroids are the safe ,they do not go to any other part of body except the airways. These steroids do not have those side effects of oral steroids.
Because of prevalent myths people keep taking tablets like "Betnenal" etc which are unnecessary and are harmful resulting into many serious complications.

People also have myth on food , they avoid all white articles like milk, curd , rice , banana , butter etc. Food should never be avoided on presumptions as each food is nutritious particularly for growing children. Banana is rich in calcium, potassium , iron and many other things , it is a hygienically packed easy to carry power-packed food for all. Curd is a rich pro biotic .
Allergy tests are available even for food , avoid only if you test positive for a particular food.
Letus attack asthma by all scientific means , its easy to control it.

Swine Flu precautions for Asthma patients.

Swine flu virus is spreading its tentacles all over the world causing a panic like situation.
Though the panic is unnecessary but precautions should be a strict universal rule .High risk patients like those suffering from Asthma , Diabetes , children and aged and also those in whom the immune status is compromised need to be especially careful.
High nutritious status should be maintained , fasting to be avoided , medication should be regular , monitoring of basic disease more frequent , adequate fluid intake , avoidance of smoking , alcohol and drugs of abuse are a must.
Asthmatics should surely continue their preventive inhalers regularly and should always keep the emergency bronchodilator inhaler in pocket for ready use in case of urgent need in case of bronchospasm from any cause.
Exposure to irritants of respiratory tract like any smoke , pungent smells , strongperfumes, talcum powder, and other inhalant irritants to be avoided.
Precautions to keep away from those suffering from respiratory infections are the same universal such as to avoid contact with droplet infections from cough, sneezing or fomite contact.
Washing hands thoroughly and frequently should be a habit even in normal routine.
Use of masks , ordinary handkerchief or multilayered clean cloth to avoid contact with respiratory droplets is needed. The mask should be changed daily and secretions to be disposed of in tissue paper by burning. If handkerchief has been used it should be washed thoroughly with strong detergent , should be sun dried and should be ironed with hot iron to do away with the virus.
In case you have cold , cough , fever , running nose seek medical advise so that you can be observed, do not wait for severe symptoms like choking , chest tightness , drowsiness etc .
If these develop isolation and hospitalisation is a must and doctors would do the needful after sending the tests.
Treatment is available do not panic and do not pressurise the doctors to test you for swine flu.
Majority of patients are getting cured , so be positive and prudent. Spread awareness.
